I Hate My Job! Is That Really How You Feel?
The words I hate my job are among the saddest words a person can say. There is a level of deep sadness, a feeling of distress and despair.
But there is also an acceptance of the unrelenting fact that you really need a job, even if it is the one you hate.
I know firsthand of friends, acquaintances and colleagues who have expressed hatred of their jobs. Some have stated that they wish there was something else they could do, but they didn’t seem to know what.
When I faced the facts, I realized I was not happy about being tied to a job, nor having my life under the control of someone else. Being an employee was no longer a good thing for me. So I took steps to change that.
Why People say I Hate My Job!
A job is never secure and often not much fun for a number of reasons:
Repetitive tasks
Unpleasant conditions
Unreasonable policies
A terrible boss
Unfulfilled promises
Corporate politics
Questionable hiring or promotions
Policies that do not make sense
Dictatorial approaches to “management”
Stupid Decisions
Is it any wonder why people hate the “electric rooster” (alarm clock)? They don’t want to get up and return to the things listed above. They live for pay days, holidays and vacations because they can finally, even for a short time, get away from The Job.
It is unfortunate that even with a little time off, should subject of work come up, it presents another chance to say, I hate my job!
Options if You Hate Your Job, but Still Want One
There are people who love their jobs but that is likely to be a minority. The majority of people don’t like what they do for a living, and that is sad.
So what if you just want to leave the job you hate so much?
What can you do?
Get A Different Job. If you do not like what you are currently doing, you can look for another job. Try to find something you will like doing. Just remember that regardless of the job and how much money you make, you still have threats and risks to job income. The Job Outlook is still cloudy.
Retrain For A Different Career. You may decide to do something completely different and it would require going back to school. Make sure this is something you want to do for a living.
Also beware that there is another risk involved. Are you certain you will recoup your educational investment? In other words, are you confident you will get a job in your new profession?
There May Be A Risk. Are you an older worker? Unfortunately, age discrimination does occur. The Job Outlook in this case is quite shaky.
Employers may want to hire younger workers because they can get them for less money and because they feel they will not be as expensive in terms of health coverage.
Older workers who wish to be paid for their experience would cost a company more in terms of paying a higher salary to secure them.
What About Self-Employment?
If you are constantly saying I Hate My Job! maybe you think you want to be your own boss.
You may think that you want to be self-employed. And there is nothing wrong with that. However, you must determine if this is what you really want to do.
Can you really walk away from all those benefits you would have as an employee working for someone else?
Many who start their own small business find that they are constantly working to keep things running. And like employment, there are risks to self-employment income.
Because of the time commitment needed to keep a steady stream of work, self-employed people can find that their business owns them. They don’t own the business.
It can be quite demanding but many still prefer being in charge.
If the idea of going through the motions really, really bothers you, you ought to consider making a complete break from employment.
In this situation, you must consider the income producing options available to you. Determine first what your interests are and then investigate the different approaches to income and choose what is best for you.
